“He also drove out the nations before them…” Psalm 78:55a

THE CONQUEST OF CANAAN

The long journey from Egypt to Canaan had come to an end. Moses had gone to receive his reward in heaven. Joshua was the next leader. But it was God who continued to lead His people.

“He also drove out the nations before them,
Allotted them an inheritance by survey,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.”
Psalm 78:55

1. “He also drove out the nations before them”

a) Once again the focus was on God’s role.
b) It was the Lord who drove out the nations.
i) This was mightier than Israel.
ii) Through Joshua, Israel managed to conquer their enemies.

2. “Allotted them an inheritance by survey”

a) Allotment was done by survey.
b) Each tribe was allowed to choose the land it preferred.
c) Each tribe would receive its personal inheritance.

3. “And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents”

a) There were twelve tribes and all were provided for.
b) They were able to settle in as they did because of the Lord’s hand protecting them.

EMPHATIC STATEMENTS FROM MOSES

Moses emphasized God’s role in leading and establishing Israel in the Holy Land.

“For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the
work of your hand. He knows your trudging through
this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD
your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.”

“You must not fear them, for the LORD your God Himself
fights for you.”
