“…fiery lightning.” Psalm 78:48b

THE DEADLY PLAGUE OF HAIL

The psalmist Asaph did not make a full list of the plagues God inflicted on the Pharaoh. However he did highlight the plague of hail.

“He also gave up their cattle to the hail,
And their flocks to fiery lightning.”
Psalm 78:48

1. Forewarning of the plague of hail (Exodus 9:13-35)

a) God gave forewarning to the Pharaoh.
i) This will be a very heavy hailstorm (Exodus 9:18).
ii) It will hit all livestock in the field (Exodus 9:19).
iii) The Egyptians were advised to bring their livestock to suitable shelters (Exodus 9:19)
b) Accompanying the hailstorm.
i) Thunder (Exodus 9:23a)
ii) Lightning (Exodus 9:23b)
iii) Hail and fire mingled (Exodus 9:24)

2. “He also gave up their cattle… and their flocks”

a) Those who did not heed these words of warning had deep regrets.
b) Cattle and flocks were killed because of the plague of hail.

3. Troubled Pharaoh sent for Moses and said

“I have sinned this time. The LORD is righteous,
and my people and I are wicked. Entreat the LORD,
that there may be no more mighty thundering and hail,
for it is enough. I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.”
Exodus 9:27-28

a) These words were spoken out of great fear.
b) Pharaoh had no answer to the might of the Lord God of the children of Israel.
