“He divided the sea and caused them to pass through…” Psalm 78:13a

EPIC EVENTS THAT MUST BE REMEMBERED WITH AWE

God performed many mighty deeds for Israel that should never have been forgotten. The crossing of the Red Sea was one such epic that should never have been forgotten!

“He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;
And He made the waters stand up like a heap.”
Psalm 78:13

1. The use of three powerful verbs to describe the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea

a) He divided the sea.
b) He caused them to pass through.
c) He made the waters stand up like a heap.

2. Carefully recorded

a) This was carefully archived as a historic event (Exodus 14).
b) This was also specially commemorated by Moses with a special psalm of praise (Exodus 15).
c) This was an event that inspired the writing of other poems/ psalms, for example, Psalm 77:16-20.

THE SIGNIFICANCE

The significance was certainly not lost on Asaph, even though he did not live in the days of Moses. He brought out the significance of the works of God in Psalm 77.

1. The Greatness of God was meant to be impressed on the hearts of Israel (Psalm 77:13).

2. The mighty deeds of God were meant to display His strength (Psalm 77:14).

3. The mighty deeds of God were part of His Redemptive Plan (Psalm 77:15).

a) Redeemed from bondage (slavery).
b) Redeemed to be God’s people.
c) Redeemed to receive a great heritage promised to Abraham.
d) Redeemed to worship and praise God.
e) Redeemed to walk in the ways of God.
