Day 112 – Psalm 78

“They did not keep the covenant of God…” Psalm 78:10a

THE COVENANT OF GOD

Israel was so privileged to have been given a Covenant through Abraham (Genesis 12-17,22). Another Covenant was given at Horeb (Sinai) where God urged Israel to take His covenant seriously. (Deuteronomy 1-5 covers the Covenant at Horeb quite extensively).

HOW DID ISRAEL REGARD THE COVENANT OF GOD?

The following text describes Israel at its worst! How could a nation so blessed by God become renegade?

“They did not keep the covenant of God;
They refused to walk in His law.”
Psalm 78:10

1. “They did not keep the covenant of God”

a) This is a general historical statement.
b) It covers the time between Moses and Asaph (he lived in the days of King David).
c) “The covenant of God”
i) This was ignored.
ii) This was set aside.
iii) This was despised.
iv) This was not honoured by the nation.

2. “They refused to walk in His law”

a) Even in the days of Moses. Israel was “stiff-necked” and stubborn.
b) Israel deliberately refused to walk with God.
c) Each man did what was right in his own eyes (Judges 21:25).

A DISASTROUS HISTORY

Asaph showed great familiarity with the history of Israel. What happened when Israel ignored the covenant of God?

1. Israel was oppressed by more powerful nations because God had removed His protection.

2. The nation suffered terribly under their cruel overlords.

3. Despite sending prophet after prophet to Israel, the nation refused to heed the word of God.
