Day 91 – Psalm 77

“Has God forgotten to be gracious?” Psalm 77:9a

A FIFTH PUZZLING QUESTION

Asaph still had no answers yet to the four questions he raised up. A fifth question arose.

“Has God forgotten to be gracious?”
Psalm 77:9a

1. Graciousness

The word “graciousness” includes the following:-

a) Kindness
b) Tenderness
c) Gentleness
d) Compassion

2. Has God forgotten to be gracious?

Asaph’s mind must have had to filter out many conflicting thoughts.

a) There was expectation from God:-
i) That He would show graciousness.
ii) That He would continue to exercise grace no matter what.
b) There were doubts that arose from many negative factors.
i) The nation of Israel was in serious trouble.
ii) The nation was (often) in danger of being annihilated.
iii) Great suffering had been experienced already.
iv) Psalm 74 recorded the demise of Jerusalem and its temple.

3. How would God become gracious to Israel again?

This would always be in the mind of the servants of God. They must raise hard questions in the hope of finding solid answers that would create new hope!

a) Would intercessory prayer cause God to be gracious once more?
b) What exactly would cause Israel to be restored into God’s favour and grace again?
c) Asaph still had no answer to any of these questions.
