Day 89 – Psalm 77

“Has His mercy ceased forever?” Psalm 77:8a

A THIRD PERPLEXING QUESTION

Two questions had been raised. However no answers had been forthcoming from the Lord. Nor had his personal search yielded any significant answers. A third question came soon after.

“Has His mercy ceased forever?”
Psalm 77:8a

THE MERCY OF GOD

This was one of the attributes of God proclaimed to Moses.

“And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed,
‘The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious,
longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.'”
Exodus 34:6

1. What a great and merciful God!

a) This was God’s self-proclamation.
b) God had declared these truths about Himself:-
i) He was merciful.
ii) He was gracious.
iii) He was longsuffering.
iv) He was abounding in goodness and truth.

2. The depth of Asaph’s problem?

a) Dark doubts clouded his heart and mind.
b) He wondered just how much God’s mercy could be stretched.
c) Were there limits to God’s mercy?
d) Could God’s mercy cease… one day?
e) Could Israel have come to the end of the rope and God’s mercy would now cease forever?

3. What if God refused to show any more mercy?

UNTHINKABLE CONSEQUENCES

Asaph did not come up with answers on this subject too. He would not dare to be presumptuous about God’s mercy. Dark doubts assailed him mercilessly.
