“I am so troubled that I cannot speak.” Psalm 77:4b

IN DANGER OF DEPRESSION

Great danger is afoot when a person starts feeling overwhelmed. Deep depression is just around the corner.

“You hold my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.”
Psalm 77:4

Asaph openly and candidly described how he felt as his spirit felt overwhelmed.

1. “You hold my eyelids open”

a) Insomnia sets in.
b) The eyelids remain opened.
c) Normal tiredness did not occur.
d) The spirit is unable to find rest.

2. “I am so troubled”

a) There were troubles in life that had to be faced.
b) In normal circumstances one can cope with these troubles.
c) When one feels overwhelmed the troubles of life seem to be even more distressful.

3. “I cannot speak”

a) He could not articulate what he felt clearly.
b) He could not share his feelings with people easily.
i) Family
ii) Friends

4. “You”

a) This is a reference to God.
b) God was the only Person Asaph still felt he could communicate with.
c) Thus he turned to God in prayer with as much candour as he could muster.
