“I remembered God…” Psalm 77:3a
THE SEARCH FOR SOUL-COMFORT
Psalm 77 affords us a rare glimpse of a man’s search for comfort for his soul. It was in the midst of deep trouble that Asaph tracked his search for soul-comfort.
“I remembered God, and was troubled;
I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed.”
Psalm 77:3
1. “I cried out to God with my voice”
That was the first step that Asaph took (Psalm 77:1). It was only the first step. Many more steps would have to be taken before his soul found rest.
2. “I sought the Lord”
This was the second step (Psalm 77:2). It was a logical next step. Prayer was never meant to be a mere reliever of stress and worry. Asaph knew what he must do next.
3. “I remembered God”
This was the third step (Psalm 77:3a). But what did he mean when he said that he remembered God and then continued to feel “troubled”?
a) Asaph must have examined what he knew about God.
b) He had learned much about the Person of God.
i) Through the Scriptures.
ii) Through personal experience.
iii) Through his interaction with his teachers and fellow Levites.
c) Manifold attributes of God:-
i) There is more to God than just a name.
ii) There is more to God than just Deity to whom we direct prayers.
d) Manifold acts of God:-
i) The acts of God revealed Him.
ii) The acts of God revealed that He could be positively and graciously inclined.
iii) The acts of God also revealed that He could be negatively inclined.
His soul was troubled even as he continued his search for answers from God.
