Day 75 – Psalm 77

“In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord…” Psalm 77:2a

READING PSALM 77

Psalm 77 is an intensely personal psalm. Asaph used the first person pronoun again and again. At first reading it would appear that this psalm is very similar to Psalm 74.

But this psalm was dedicated to the Chief Musician. It was especially entrusted to Jeduthun. Thus this psalm was also to be used in public worship. How may we resolve this issue? How may we interpret Psalm 77?

1. Written as a personal psalm

a) Psalm 77 was written for personal contemplation as Psalm 74 was.
b) This psalm was written as a prayer to God.
c) There were many personal elements in the psalm peculiar to Asaph.

2. Written for public usage

a) Psalm 77 was also intended for public usage.
b) The psalmist’s feelings would well reflect what the congregation was experiencing.
c) Though the style may be personal it would be fit for public reading.

A GLIMPSE OF THE PRAYER LIFE OF ASAPH

What was the ministry of prayer like? Psalm 77 would give us a glimpse of how Asaph ministered in prayer.

“In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord;
My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing.”
Psalm 77:2a,b

1. “In the day of my trouble”

a) Trouble comes to everyone.
b) Trouble came to Israel.
c) Trouble was also experienced by Asaph.

2. “I sought the Lord”

a) This was a personal testimony.
b) It was also highly instructive.

All should be encouraged to seek the Lord in the day of trouble.
