THE MAKING OF VOWS

Asaph was a Levite and would thus be very familiar with the doctrine and practice of making vows. Let us ponder his advice on this subject.

“Make vows to the LORD your God, and pay them.”
Psalm 76:11a

1. “Make vows to the LORD your God”

Was Asaph actually encouraging people to make vows?

a) Technically, yes!
b) Vows can be wholesome promises made to God.
c) It is perfectly acceptable to make vows to God:-
i) As an expression of faith in God.
ii) As an expression of love for God.
iii) As an expression of appreciation to God when He delivers us from trouble.

2. “And pay them”

Were there examples of people who made vows and paid them faithfully?

a) David made vows and kept them (Psalm 22:25).
i) He made a vow to God when he was severely oppressed by enemies (Psalm 56).
ii) To him, vows were binding upon him (Psalm 56:12).
b) An acceptable practice.
i) The making of vows was an acceptable religious practice.
ii) David made a number of vows to God in his lifetime.
c) The challenge is to pay the vows made to God.
i) The keeping of vows reflects character.
ii) The keeping of vows reflects determination of spirit.
iii) The keeping of vows reflects depth and maturity of faith.
