“You caused judgment to be heard from heaven…” Psalm 76:8a

THE JUDGMENT OF GOD

This is a topic that people have trouble comprehending. Some even feel justified that they can reject a religion that teaches about God’s judgment. The psalmist Asaph however was adamant that this doctrine of God’s judgment be well taught and appreciated.

“You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;
The earth feared and was still.”
Psalm 76:8

1. “You caused judgment to be heard from heaven”

a) The doctrine of God as a Divine Judge is consistently upheld.
b) King David certainly wrote about God being a Judge (Psalms 7, 9).
i) God is a just Judge (Psalm 7:11a)
ii) He has prepared His throne for judgment (Psalm 9:7b).
iii) He will judge the world in righteousness (Psalm 9:8a).
iv) He will administer justice in righteousness (Psalm 9:8b).
c) God’s judgment will indeed be heard from heaven.
i) God’s judgment would be made known to the world.
ii) Both heaven and earth will learn about God’s judgment.
iii) The judgment of God would be expressed in mighty deeds.

2. “The earth feared and was still”

a) That the earth should fear is an appropriate response.
i) The earth- a general reference to all living creatures.
ii) The earth- a specific reference to mankind.
b) The earth was still.
i) It waits upon God’s judgment with bated breath.
ii) Stillness is an appropriate expression of a genuine fear of God.
