“You, Yourself are to be feared…” Psalm 76:7a

RECORDING THE WORKS OF GOD

The works of God done for Israel were many. They were carefully recorded in the Scriptures. The following took great pains to archive these works. Moses and Joshua took great pains to record the many mighty acts of God.

REMEMBERING THE WORKS OF GOD

Psalmists like Asaph did the right thing when they took the time and trouble to learn vital lessons from these events.

“You, Yourself, are to be feared;
And who may stand in Your presence when
once You are angry?”
Psalm 76:7

1. The knowledge of God

a) God revealed Himself through His servants.
b) He also revealed Himself through many mighty deeds (Psalm 76:6).
c) He is a God to be feared indeed.
i) All must stand in awe of Him.
ii) All must be humbled in spirit before Him.
d) The anger of God was highlighted for a special reason.
i) God’s anger is to be feared in particular.
ii) His anger is always of the righteous kind.
iii) His anger is never based on caprice.

2. Appropriate response to the knowledge of God

a) Fearing the Lord was chosen as the appropriate response.
b) This was the desired response from God’s own standpoint.
c) This was well taught in the following text:-

“And Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear; for
God has come to test you, and that His fear may
be before you, so that you may not sin.'”
Exodus 20:20

The correct kind of fear will help prevent sin. A morbid fear of God however is to be rejected.
