Day 32 – Psalm 74

“Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old…” Psalm 74:2a

GOD’S ANSWERS

God could answer these questions in a number of ways in the Old Testament days. The following were ways in which God communicated with His people.

1. He could have spoken directly.

2. He could have given dreams and visions.

3. He could have sent a special angel.

4. He could have sent a prophet.

WHEN GOD IS SILENT

But what if God chose to remain silent? Where do we go from there? The psalmist offers an excellent example here.

Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old,
The tribe of Your inheritance, which You have redeemed-
This Mount Zion where You have dwelt.â??
Psalm 74:2

1. “Remember”

a) This was the way in which Moses prayed (Exodus 32:13).
b) This was a plea to remember the covenant God had with Israel.
c) This is not an attempt to jog the memory of God!

2. Pleading with God

This approach was reminiscent of the way Moses interceded on behalf of Israel (Exodus 32-34).

a) That Israel was God’s own gathered people (“congregation”).
b) That Israel had been purchased of old.
c) The idea of being “purchased” is closely linked with the idea of redemption.
d) That God had chosen Israel as His inheritance (Deuteronomy 7:6).
e) That God had said that He would make Zion His dwelling place (2 Chronicles 7:12).

3. Strong pleading

When God does not seem to answer, strong pleading must continue to ascend to God! Silence does not mean rejection. Silence from God offers an opportunity to plead further in prayer.
