Day 28 – Psalm 73

“Those who are far from You shall perish…” Psalm 73:27a

THE FATE OF THE WICKED

The psalmist Asaph now took one last look at the wicked. He now understood their end. It was a fate that he was glad would never be his.

“For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish;
You have destroyed all those who desert You for harlotry.”
Psalm 73:27

1. “For indeed”

a) There was now certainty of understanding.
b) With spiritual enlightenment there was always clarity of vision.
c) The psalmist could now write, “Indeed” as he concludes his psalm.

2. “Those who are far from You”

a) These were people who had rejected God (Psalm 73:9, 11).
b) They had become so arrogant they defy God (Psalm 73:9, 11).
c) They had strayed far from God indeed.

3. “Those who desert You for harlotry”

a) The word “harlotry” was used regularly to describe two main things;-
i) Those who sought out harlots (prostitutes).
ii) Those who sought false gods and offered them worship.
iii) The latter was more often in mind.
b) Turning to idols was decried as “harlotry”.

4. The fate of the wicked

a) They will “perish”.
b) They will be “destroyed”.
c) Their final state in life is not to be envied at all.
