Day 2 – Psalm 73

“Truly God is good… to such as are pure in heart.” Psalm 73:1

BACKGROUND OF THE ASAPHITE-LEVITICAL MINISTRY

It would help immensely if we have more than the name “Asaph” to work with as we read Psalm 73. What may we know about the ministry of the Levite Asaph?

“Now these are the men whom David appointed
over the service of song in the house of the LORD,
after the ark came to rest.
They were ministering with music before the dwelling place
of the tabernacle of meeting, until Solomon had built
the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, and they served
in their office according to their order.”
1 Chronicles 6:31-32

1. The Levites were divided carefully into “orders”.

2. The heads of the family ministered with their sons.

3. Some were especially set apart for a special “music ministry”.

a) “Service of song”
b) “Ministering with music”

4. Levi had three sons (1 Chronicles 6:1)

a) Gershon
b) Kohath
c) Merari

5. Specific mention of two of the sons of Levi.

a) The Kohathites 1 Chronicles 6:33-43
b) The Merarites 1 Chronicles 6:44-48

Both families produced singers and thus served in the music ministry.

6. The Gershonites (Sometimes spelt as Gershom).

These served as caretakers of the Tabernacle. They did logistics work. Their main ministry was to care for the physical needs of the Tabernacle. Their work was just as important.
