Day 13 – Psalm 73

“How does God know?” Psalm 73:11a

THE LANGUAGE OF THE WICKED

The psalmist Asaph also noted the language and vocabulary of the wicked-rich. The following sentence may well be typical of the way in which the wicked-rich speak among themselves.

“And they say, ‘How does God know?
And is there knowledge in the Most High?'”
Psalm 73:11

1. “And they say”

a) A community of people often has its own special vocabulary and language.
b) Certain words and sentences become “stock phrases”.
c) These words would be bandied about by the homogenous group of the wicked-rich.

2. Two statements seem to be very common among the wicked-rich

a) “How does God know?”
i) The wicked-rich have little to do with God (in the first place).
ii) They adopt a defiant attitude towards God.
iii) They both deny and defy God in their thoughts and words.
b) “And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
i) The terminology used by the righteous is employed here.
ii) The faithful and righteous acknowledge God as “The Most High”.
iii) However the name of God- “The Most High” is not used with the nuance of faith.
iv) The idea of God possessing knowledge is disdained.
v) The idea of God has been reduced to absurdity.
vi) The wicked-rich had become full of themselves!
