“Waters of a full cup are drained by them…” Psalm 73:10b

GROWTH OF WICKEDNESS

The psalmist Asaph wrote with a growing sense of concern about the wicked. It would appear as if they had become “a people”.

“Therefore his people return here,
And waters of a full cup are drained by them.”
Psalm 73:10

1. “His people”

a) Wickedness is personified here.
b) It would seem as if wickedness had gathered for himself “a people”.
i) These people are committed to wickedness.
ii) Wickedness is their code of life.

2. “Therefore his people return here”

a) Wickedness almost seem to have invaded Israel.
b) Many more people had joined the ranks of wickedness.
c) They had made their presence felt in Israel.
d) They seemed to have returned to Israel to spread their wickedness.

3. “Waters of a full cup”

a) This imagery is a little complex to comprehend.
b) The giving of a cup of water is basic courtesy extended even to strangers.
i) It is a symbol of kindness.
ii) It is a symbol of goodness.

4. Drained by them

a) The wicked think little about the goodwill offered to them.
b) They will take cups of kindness and drain them dry, but will remain wicked.
