“The kings of Tarshish and of the isles will bring presents…” Psalm 72:10a

PAYING OF HOMAGE

We have a further description of the grandeur of the Messianic kingdom in the following text.

“The kings of Tarshish and of the isles will bring presents;
The kings of Sheba and Seba will offer gifts.”
Psalm 72:10

1. Identification

a) “Tarshish”
i) Some scholars have offered the suggestion that this could be Spain.
ii) In the Book of Jonah, Tarshish was mentioned as the faraway destination of Jonah, when he tried to flee from God (Jonah 1:3).
b) “The isles”
i) There isn’t enough information to locate these islands. They could be a reference to small islands far away.
ii) The significance is that though they are far away they recognized the majesty of the Messiah King and wish to pay tribute.
c) “Sheba”
i) This has been identified by some scholars to be a reference to a kingdom located in Southern Arabia.
ii) The queen of Sheba paid tribute to Solomon (1 Kings 10:1-13).
d) “Seba”
i) This has been identified by some scholars to be a reference to a nation in North Africa.
ii) The majesty of the Messiah-King was recognised far and wide.

2. Paying of Tribute

The tribute to the Messiah-King took the form of presents/gifts. Each gift represented acknowledge of the power and majesty of the Messiah-King! (Solomon had a foretaste of the majesty of the Messianic Kingdom when he received gifts).
