Day 344 – Psalm 72

“Give… Your righteousness to the kingâ??s Son.” Psalm 72:1b

A CORONATION PRAYER

Psalm 72 is essentially a coronation prayer. This was Solomon’s personal prayer, but a careful study of the psalm would reveal that it was highly influenced by king David.

“Give the king Your judgments, O God,
And Your righteousness to the king’s Son.”
Psalm 72:1

1. “Give the king… O God”

a) Solomon may be crowned king.
b) But he expressed his need to be given
i) The Lord’s judgments.
ii) The Lord’s righteousness.

2. David’s word to Solomon (1 Chronicles 28:9-10)

a) A charge to build the Temple.
b) This charge was given before Solomon was crowned King.
c) Contents of this admonishment:-
i) To know God personally.
ii) To determine to serve Him with a loyal heart.
iii) To serve with a willing mind.
iv) To revere God who searches the intents of the heart.
v) A firm word of warning never to forsake God, or run the danger of being forsaken by Him.
vi) Challenge to find the strength to fulfil this charge.

3. Reverence for God caused Solomon to pray as he did

He knew that he would need to know the Judgments of God (The law, the judiciary system) and to be given righteousness to be able to rule well.
