Day 342 – Psalm 71

“My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long…” Psalm 71:24a

CONCLUDING ON A WONDERFUL NOTE

Psalm 71 concludes on a wonderful note of rejoicing in the Lord. The trust of the psalmist in God that had been cultivated for decades had stood him in good stead!

“My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness
all the day long,
For they are confounded, for they are brought to shame
Who seek my hurt.”
Psalm 71:24

1. Wicked enemies

a) They were cruel and unrighteous (Psalm 71:4).
b) They plotted to destroy (Psalm 71:10-11).

2. Prayer against enemies

a) That they may be confounded (Psalm 71:13a).
b) That they may be consumed (Psalm 71:13a).
c) That they may be covered with reproach and dishonor (Psalm 71:13c).

3. Prayer answered

a) They are indeed confounded (Psalm 71:24b).
b) They are brought to shame (Psalm 71:24c).

4. “My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long”

a) Focus: God’s righteousness
i) Not the psalmist’s personal righteousness.
ii) God’s righteousness is His faithfulness shown to those who trust Him (Psalm 36:5-6).
b) Full commitment

The psalmist committed himself to talk about the Lord and His righteousness. Psalm 71 is one expression of this commitment to speak of the Lord’s righteousness and His goodness so wonderfully experienced.
