“Let me never be put to shame.” Psalm 71:1b

A FIRM DECLARATION OF TRUST IN GOD

The author begins his discussion on the subject of trust in God with a firm and clear declaration of his personal trust.

“In You, O Lord, I put my trust;
Let me never be put to shame.”
Psalm 71:1

1. “In You, O Lord”

a) The title “LORD” was carefully chosen among many other names of God.
b) What this signifies:-
i) A consciousness of the Lord’s role as a Covenant-God.
ii) This name was revealed by God to Moses (Exodus 6:2-3).
iii) It was by the name Lord that God delivered Israel from Egypt.
iv) This name of God would be used by redeemed Israel from here on.

2. “In You… I put my trust”

a) A personal relationship is declared.
b) The author was affirming the following:-
i) There was clear personal knowledge of God.
ii) There was a personal faith in God.
iii) This faith grew to a point where he could openly declare his trust in the Lord.

3. “Let me never be put to shame”

a) This is a personal and earnest plea.
b) A plea that God would honour the trust placed in Him.
c) A plea that the believer would have no reason to feel let down by God, or be disappointed in Him.
