"Establish the just..."

Day 54 – Psalm 7

“Establish the just…” Psalm 7:9b

HOW WOULD GOD JUDGE?

David was confident about his understanding of God as Judge. This knowledge of how God would judge may be seen in the following text.

“Oh, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end,
But establish the just;
For the righteous God tests the hearts and minds.
My defense is of God, who saves the upright in heart.”
Psalm 7:9-10

1. “The wickedness of the wicked”

a) This is a specific reference to the wicked plots of David’s enemies against him.
b) This is not a general reference to wickedness in the world.

2. “Let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end”

a) David was confident that God can discern who is wicked and who is righteous.
b) God’s Divine verdict would:-
i) Put an end to the wickedness of the wicked.
ii) Establish the just.
c) God would do this for the sakes of the righteous innocent (Psalm 7:7b).
d) His judgment would display the Lord as “The righteous God”.

3. “The righteous God tests the hearts and minds”

a) God would not need to resort to legal arguments.
b) Being God He is most able to “test the hearts and minds”.
c) He will easily distinguish the righteous from the wicked.

4. “My defense is of God, who saves the upright in heart”

a) God would be the defense of the upright in heart.
b) He would also be their Saviour.
