“Let Your salvation, O God, set me on high…” Psalm 69:29b

THE ESSENCE OF IMPRECATORY PRAYERS

There are a number of things that make up the essence of imprecatory prayers. The following may be noted:-

1. Anguish

This is brought on by deep suffering. It is virtually impossible to measure the depth of pain and anguish sustained by victims of wicked plots and deeds.

2. Anger

This anger is understandable, because of uncalled for oppressive and cruel deeds. When there is a blatant disregard shown by perpetrators of evil, those who suffer, often nurse a deep but helpless sense of anger.

3. Appeal

This is the third element. The sufferer turns to God and pours out his heart, appealing for Divine justice to be served.

A STIRRING OF THE HEART TO EXERCISE FAITH

Not many are able to exercise faith when they have had to endure great suffering. Many give up hope. They resign themselves to their fate! The psalmist David teaches us how we can and must exercise faith with even greater hope when everything seems hopeless.

“But I am poor and sorrowful;
Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.”
Psalm 69:29

1. A sad state of life described

a) I am poor.
b) And sorrowful.

2. A mighty prayer of faith

a) Praying with faith that God would send forth salvation (deliverance).
b) Praying that God would do more than deliver from wicked enemies.
c) Praying that God would actually set the believer on high.
d) Praying along these lines would require a stirring of a heart of great faith.
