Day 304 – Psalm 69

“For Your sake…” Psalm 69:7

FOR THE SAKE OF THE LORD

Psalm 69 is classified as “Messianic”. There are special references to the Messiah. These references make sense only when they are applied to the Messiah Jesus. The following text is an example.

“Because for Your sake I have borne reproach;
Shame has covered my face.
I have become a stranger to my brothers,
And an alien to my mother’s children;
Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up,
And the reproaches of those who reproach You
have fallen on me.”
Psalm 69:7-9

1. Great Consciousness of God

a) Jesus had an exquisite consciousness of God His Father.
b) The Gospel of John highlights this consciousness (John 5, 8, 17 etc).
c) Two major lines of thought were borne in mind at the time:-
i) Bearing suffering for the sake of God.
ii) Untiring zeal for the House of God (John 2:14-17).

2. Great willingness to suffer for the sake of God

a) The enemies of Jesus reproached Him again and again (John 5, 8).
b) They sought to bring shame upon Him every chance they had (John 9).
c) They even suggested that Jesus was in league with demons (Mark 3:22).

3. Great endurance shown

a) His siblings turned against Him and taunted Him because they did not believe in Him (John 7:1-5).
b) His own family thought that He was out of His mind (Mark 3:21).
c) They were never part of the multitude who sat at His feet (Mark 3:32).
