Day 298 – Psalm 68

“Your God has commanded your strength…” Psalm 68:28a

DEEP AND THOROUGH

David must have pondered deeply and thoroughly as he wrote this contemplative-historical psalm. He thought about how God had wonderfully brought Israel out of Egypt into the Promised Land. God’s leading climaxed in establishing the Ark of the Lord in Jerusalem. What else would be needed?

“Your God has commanded your strength;
Strengthen, O God, what You have done for us.”
Psalm 68:28

1. Strength was needed

a) This is not a reference to mere human or physical strength alone.
b) God’s strength would be needed.
c) It takes great wisdom to discern this need.

2. A prayer for strength

a) Divine strength must be sought in prayer.
b) Divine strength would be needed even after all the enemies have been defeated and the Ark of God established in Jerusalem.

3. Underlying reasons for seeking Divine strength

The following candid reasons may be offered:-

a) Unity in Israel was fragile (at best).
b) There were few truly spiritually strong leaders.
i) The great prophet Samuel was dead.
ii) There were only a handful of good prophets (like Nathan).
c) Israel’s history of falling into sin (The period of the Judges was a dark one).
d) The enemies of Israel may be subjugated- but all await the day when they can strike at Israel again.
e) The House of David was not very strong.

As long as David was alive, he could point people to God- but after his death?
