Day 295 – Psalm 68

“The Lord said…” Psalm 68:22a

A SOLEMN WORD

The wicked who persists in fighting against the Lord and His people would do well to ponder the solemn words found in the following text:-

“The Lord said, ‘I will bring back from Bashan,
I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,
That your foot may crush them in blood,
And the tongues of your dogs may have their portion
from your enemies.'”
Psalm 68:22-23

1. “The Lord said”

a) These words come from the Lord Himself.
b) This is a solemn pledge from God to His people (Israel).

2. Action taken against the enemies of Israel

a) “Bashan”
i) This is now the physical land of the enemies.
ii) These were rich and powerful enemies.
iii) They reckon that if they were defeated by Israel they could always escape to their mountainous peaks.
iv) And one day when they had regained strength they would attack Israel again (implied).
v) God challenged this strategy. He will break the power of Bashan.
b) “From the depths of the sea”
i) This is just a figure of speech. The enemies think that they can flee from the presence of God by sea.
ii) God urged them to think otherwise. Even if they could find a hiding place in the depths of the sea, He would bring them back to be judged and be subjugated.

3. Israel will crush its enemies so thoroughly even the dogs would have their fill from the portion of their enemies.
