Day 288 – Psalm 68

“Though you lie down among the sheepfolds…” Psalm 68:13a

A HUMBLE STATE

What was Israel like before the Lord’s personal involvement? For that matter, what would David be like without the Lord’s blessing? David was very honest in his assessment.

“Though you lie down among the sheepfolds,
You will be like the wings of a dove covered with silver,
And her feathers with yellow gold.”
Psalm 68:13

1. “Though you lie down among the sheepfolds”

a) It could be applied to the people who lead Israel.
b) It could also be applied to Israel (as sheep).
c) Either way, they are not known for might (sheep are not known for might).

2. You will be like… a dove

a) The word “dove” was chosen on purpose.
i) Israel was not a hawk but a dove.
ii) Despite having to fight many wars, Israel was essentially a dove.
iii) This understanding ought to be emphasised and maintained.
b) A special dove
An imaginary dove was conjured employing two expressions:-
i) Wings covered with silver.
ii) Feathers covered with yellow gold.

3. Significance of this imagery

What was the significance of writing this text?

a) Transformation
David thought of how God had changed Israel from weakness to strength.
b) A New Creation
There was really no way to fully describe what Israel had become. The nation was so blessed it could only be described as a metaphorical dove.
