Psalm 68:9b "You confirmed Your inheritance..."

Day 286 – Psalm 68

“You confirmed Your inheritance…” Psalm 68:9b

INHERITANCE

This was a significant word in Old Testament theology. It was God who gave a solemn promise to Abraham that He would give the land of Canaan to his descendants (Exodus 12:17– This promise was repeated a number of times so that Abraham may be fully assured that God would indeed fulfil what He had promised. {Exodus 13:14-17; 15})

A DEEP ASSURANCE

David reflected on this theological promise of “inheritance” in the following text.

“You, O God, sent a plentiful rain,
Whereby You confirmed Your inheritance, when it was weary.
Your congregation dwelt in it;
You, O God, provided from Your goodness for the poor.”
Psalm 68:9-10

1. “You, O God sent a plentiful rain”

a) The writings of Moses did not actually describe rainfall. (Moses did not enter the Promised land personally; Deuteronomy 34:1-6.)
b) There was however the promise of rain (Leviticus 26:4).
c) David applied this promise of God in his psalm.

2. “Whereby You confirmed Your inheritance, when it was weary”

a) David thought about how Israel first began dwelling in Canaan.
b) God’s bountiful blessings must have been outpoured on the nation.
c) “Plentiful rain” was an apt description to describe how Israel had been refreshed by the Lord time and again.

3. “Your congregation dwelt in it”

This was a description of how Israel (Godâ??s congregation) began dwelling in the Promised Land (Genesis 15 in particular).

4. “You, O God, provided from Your goodness for the poor”

God had not only promised, He had fully provided! Even the poor were provided for. The blessings of God were outpoured because of God’s abundant goodness!
