Day 281 – Psalm 68

“So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.” Psalm 68:2c

THE PRESENCE OF GOD

David developed a wonderful sense of appreciation of the Presence of God in his life. This was carefully cultivated over many years. Three things may be highlighted:-

1. Prayers were wonderfully answered.

2. God delivered David out of many predicaments and perils.

3. God revealed many precious truths to David.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD WAS NOT ALWAYS APPRECIATED

God graciously gave the Ark of the Covenant to Israel as a physical reminder of His presence among them. Sadly, this was not always appreciated or even understood. In the days of Eli, the Ark of the Lord was little more than a superstitious religious relic. Israel thought that the Ark could be used as a last resort to fight the Philistines. The ark of the Lord however ended up being captured by the Philistines (1 Samuel 4-6).

“As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
As wax melts before the fire,
So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.”
Psalm 68:2

1. The wicked

a) The Philistines may indeed be described as wicked.
b) Time and again they invaded Israel.
c) They plundered and killed indiscriminately.
d) They mocked the God of Israel when they attempted to put the Ark of God into the temple of Dagon.

2. The Presence of God in the land of the Philistines

a) The wicked was compared aptly to the following:-
i) Smoke in the presence of a breeze.
ii) Wax in the presence of fire.
b) Many perished as God unleashed a plague on the land of the Philistines.
