Day 268 – Psalm 66

“You brought us out to rich fulfilment.” Psalm 66:12c

THE DIFFICULT TIME OF TESTING REMEMBERED

Israel underwent many difficult moments in its history. There were many enemies who did great damage to the nation. The following text reflects those trying times.

“You brought us into the net;
You laid affliction on our backs.
You have caused men to ride over our heads;
We went through fire and through water;
But You brought us out to rich fulfilment.”
Psalm 66:11-12

1. A candid description of the tests that Israel underwent

a) You
i) The psalmist named God as the prime mover.
ii) God did not merely allow Israel to be tested.
iii) God personally brought Israel into these testing times.
b) Powerful descriptive phrases were employed.
i) Israel was trapped by “net(s)” of enemies (Israel could not escape easily from the plots of these wicked enemies).
ii) Enemies rode over their heads (trampled by horses).
iii) Fire and water (extremely tough trials).

GOD’S DIVINE PURPOSES

What was God’s purpose in making Israel go through such fiery trials? A careful study of Israel’s history would reveal the following truths.

1. God wanted to cure Israel from its perpetual backslidings.

2. He wanted to help Israel realise the foolishness and impotence of trusting idols that were nothing more than man-made deities.

3. He desired Israel to return to their Covenant-relationship.

4. He also wanted Israel to know that He had their best interest at heart.

5. There were many promises that awaited fulfilment.

6. At the end of their trials there would indeed be “rich fulfilment”.

The awesome deeds of God would confirm the truth of the Divine promises.
