Day 265 – Psalm 66

“He rules by His power forever…” Psalm 66:7a

THEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The psalmist added theological significance to his song of praise.

“He rules by His power forever;
His eyes observe the nations;
Do not let the rebellious exalt themselves.”
Psalm 66:7

1. Not just musical directions

The psalmist certainly gave instructions as to how his song was to be rendered (Psalm 66:1-4). However, he did not merely give musical directions.

2. Deriving theological lessons

a) “He rules by His power forever”
i) The deeds of God displayed His power.
ii) These deeds also indicate that God is in power (not men).
iii) His power is eternal.
b) “His eyes observe the nations”
i) This was a great truth to the psalmist.
ii) God’s eyes watch over the nations of the earth.
iii) This may not seem obvious or even evident, but it is presented as a fact anyway.
c) “Do not let the rebellious exalt themselves.”
i) The rebellious have always existed.
ii) These challenge the rule and the power of God.
iii) They defy God time and again.
iv) They seek to exalt themselves.
v) They seek to exert human power over weaker nations.
vi) These rebellious nations are warned solemnly that they must not think that their exaltation of themselves would achieve anything! Ultimately Divine justice and power would prevail.
