Day 262 – Psalm 66

“Sing out the honour of His name…” Psalm 61:2a

MUSICAL INSTRUCTIONS

The author of Psalm 66 offered strong advice concerning musical arrangements.

“Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth!
Sing out the honour of His name;
Make His praise glorious.”
Psalm 66:1-2

It is both interesting and important to note the set of instructions that the author gave as to how this song may be rendered.

1. “Make a joyful shout… Sing out”

a) These two phrases complement each other.
b) There must be vigour and strength in singing to the Lord.

2. “The honour of His name”

a) Honour is the focus in this text.
b) What are some features of this concept of honouring of Godâ??s name?
i) There must first be consciousness of the Lord.
ii) There must be a sacred regard for the name of the Lord.
iii) Knowledge of who the Lord is would add strength and meaning to the desire to sing in honour of the Lord.
iv) Knowledge of the great deeds of God would enable us to appreciate the honour that is due to God.

3. “Make His praise glorious”

a) The song must first be well written.
b) The choir master must interpret the song well.
c) The choir must be able to sing in such a way that would cause the praise to truly sound glorious.
d) A song that seeks to praise the Lord and lift up His name as one deserving great honour must be well rendered.
e) This desire to give to God honour ought to inspire all concerned.
