Day 247 – Psalm 63

“But those who seek my life…” Psalm 63:9a

WHAT ABOUT THE WICKED?

The wicked were the enemies of David! They had absolutely no reason whatsoever to seek David’s life. David was no longer afraid of his enemies when he wrote the following text.

“But those who seek my life, to destroy it,
Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
They shall fall by the sword;
They shall be a portion for jackals.”
Psalm 63:9-10

1. “But those who seek my life, to destroy it”

a) These enemies had wicked intents.
b) They had proven that they were nothing more than killers.

2. They will receive their just recompense

a) There will be Divine retribution.
i) God will be their Judge.
ii) They will be punished for their sins.
b) There will be Prophetic word of judgment.
i) A possible reference to “hell”.

“Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.”
Psalm 63:9b

ii) Those who live by the sword would die by the sword.

“They shall fall by the sword.”
Psalm 63:10a

iii) They will die ignobly.

“They shall be a portion for jackals.”
Psalm 63:10b

Jackals are scavengers. This statement suggests that the wicked would not receive a decent burial. They may die in battle but before their corpses can be recovered and be buried properly, jackals would feast on their corpses.

CHOOSING TO WALK CLOSELY WITH THE LORD

David did not write this text to gloat over the fate of the wicked. The contents represent his deep personal belief that the unrepentant wicked would perish ultimately.

The message to the wicked would be to forsake their evil ways. The message to the righteous was one of encouragement to follow close behind God.
