Day 242 – Psalm 63

“Thus I will bless You while I live…” Psalm 63:4

DETERMINATION TO PRAISE GOD

How much do we praise God in our daily life? How strong is our determination to offer praise to the Lord when we face tough times in life? We have much to learn from David.

“Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.”
Psalm 63:4

1. “While I live”

a) David was not sure how long he would live.
b) Neither was he sure when his circumstances in life would improve.
c) But he was alive… and for that he was grateful to God.

2. “Thus I will bless You”

a) While he lived he would always seek after God.
b) He would find God in His sanctuary.
c) He would see the power and glory of God in His sanctuary.
d) He would enter into God’s presence with praise.
e) “Thus”
i) This particle denotes “conclusion”.
ii) It represents the conclusion of a logical process at work.
iii) David would always “bless” God’s name (“praise and adore”).

3. “I will lift up my hands in Your name”

There are two special ways of interpreting the lifting up of hands:-

a) Think of a child who calls upon his father with uplifted hands. (And with uplifted hands, the child cries out in trust- “Carry me”.) This relationship of loving trust certainly existed between David and God.
b) The second way to appreciate the lifting up of hands has to do with offering praise to God. This was one of the cultural ways ancient Israel would offer high praise to God. The lifting up of the hands was an expression of vigorous praise.
