Day 229 – Psalm 62

“He only is my rock and my salvation…” Psalm 62:2a

THE CHALLENGE TO WAIT UPON THE LORD

It is quite a challenge to wait upon the Lord effectively. A number of things can make it difficult to wait on the Lord “silently”.

1. Fear

This was a problem that David had had to face time and again.

2. Anxiety

With fear came anxiety. Worry would come to the heart and mind threatening trust in the Lord.

3. Negative reaction

It would be all too easy to react negatively. To a man of war, David could have resorted to great violence as he faced his enemies!

EFFECTIVE WAITING ON THE LORD

How did David effectively wait on the Lord? Let us ponder the following text.

“He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.”
Psalm 62:2

1. Focus

David chose to focus his thoughts on the Lord.

a) He meditated on God.
b) He kept his mind dwelling on what he knew about God.

2. Content of focus

a) The Lord as his Rock.
b) The Lord as his Salvation.
c) The Lord as his Defense.

3. Result of such a focus

a) Fear was kept at bay.
b) The heart was steadfast.
c) It was strong and steady and “not greatly moved”.
d) This phrase may be seen as a litote (meaning, he was not moved at all).
