Day 227 – Psalm 61

“So I will sing praise to Your name forever…” Psalm 61:8

WHAT WAS DAVID’S VOW?

Once again we read about David’s vow. What did David vow? The following text may give us a clue as to the content of his vow.

“So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may daily perform my vows.”
Psalm 61:8

1. “So”

a) It is likely that David made a vow to sing praise to God’s name.
b) This would be an appropriate response:
i) To God’s protection from enemies.
ii) To God’s preservation of life.
iii) To God’s prolonging of life.

2. “I will sing praise to Your name forever”

a) David probably vowed that he would sing praises to God forever.
b) He sought to fulfil this vow in a number of ways:-
i) He would compose new psalms of praise.
ii) He would share these psalms in public worship.
iii) He would teach people about God through these psalms.
iv) These psalms would reflect his personal joy in his faith in God.
v) This was a commitment that he intended to keep.

3. “That I may daily perform my vows”

a) David was conscious of his vows to God.
b) It is possible that he repeated this vow of praising God again and again (Psalm 22:25; 61:8).
c) This was a vow that he would seek to fulfil daily.

A TREMENDOUS CHALLENGE

Is it possible to make a vow and keep it faithfully? David’s example must give us needed encouragement. But even if we do not actually make a vow, nevertheless, we must know that it is a good and healthy desire to sing praises to God forever! Let us be challenged to give thanks and praise to this great and wonderful God of ours as long as we have breath!
