“You have given me the heritage…” Psalm 61:5b

THE DOCTRINE OF INHERITANCE

The doctrine of “inheritance” was a definite and distinct part of the Abrahamic Covenant. David showed that he understood this doctrine well.

“You have given me the heritage
Of those who fear Your name.”
Psalm 61:5b

1. “You have given me the heritage”

a) The promise of a Heritage begins with the promise of God.
i) This was first given to Abraham (Genesis 12, 15, 17, 22).
ii) This was confirmed with Isaac and Jacob (Genesis 26:24; 28:10-17).
iii) The promise of a heritage was sealed by means of a “Covenant” (Abrahamic Covenant –Genesis 17)
b) There was also a special Covenant promise made to David.
i) This took place when God spoke to David (2 Samuel 7).
ii) Reference to this Davidic Covenant was made by King Solomon at the time of the dedication of the Temple (2 Chronicles 6).
c) David believed in God’s covenant.
i) It was God who gave this promise (It may be seen as God’s oath to the patriarchs).
ii) David was confident that God would keep His oath inasmuch as he would keep his vow.

2. “Of those who fear Your name”

a) God’s covenant promise to give an inheritance was not limited to Abraham or to David alone.
b) There will be an inheritance for all who truly fear the Lord’s name.

3. “You have given”

a) God had committed Himself to fulfilling His oath to those who fear Him.
b) In David’s reflection, he gave thanks that God had indeed kept His word.
