Day 207 – Psalm 59

“And let them know that God rules in Jacob to the ends of the earth.” Psalm 59:13b

PRAYING IN QUIET WISDOM

David began his prayer with great energy. The sense of fear that he might be killed by the servants of King Saul caused him to utter a strong imprecatory prayer. But as he prayed and as he waited upon the Lord, he gained deep insights and wisdom. He was still concerned about the wicked and their evil activities but now his thoughts were uttered in quiet wisdom.

“Consume them in wrath, consume them,
That they may not be;
And let them know that God rules in Jacob
To the ends of the earth.
Psalm 59:13

1. “Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be”

a) The destruction of the wicked was still very much on David’s heart and mind.
b) He still prayed that God’s wrath may fall upon the unrepentant wicked.
c) But he was no longer attempting to hurry God to take action.
d) Wisdom prevailed now:
i) There must be a waiting upon the Lord (Psalm 59:9a).
ii) There must be an exercise of trust in the Lord (Psalm 59:8-10).
iii) There were lessons for the upright to learn well (“lest my people forget” Psalm 59:11a).

2. “And let them know that God rules in Jacob to the ends of the earth”

a) Saul may be king of Israel.
b) But the Supreme Potentate was the LORD of hosts!
i) He reigns over Jacob (i.e. “Israel”).
ii) He also reigns “to the end of the earth”.
c) And let them know:
i) A reference to the enemies.
ii) They must come to this humbling realization that they do not have supreme power.
iii) This knowledge must also be re-affirmed in the heart of all God’s people.
