Day 203 – Psalm 59

“But You, O LORD shall laugh at them…” Psalm 59:8a

NOTHING TAKEN FOR GRANTED

David found himself in a dire dilemma. He knew that he could not take anything for granted! Prayer was something that he would not take for granted either. Hence he prayed the way he did:-

1. He pleaded for Divine deliverance. Psalm 59:1-2

2. He presented the activities of his wicked enemies. Psalm 59:3-4, 6-7

3. He appealed to the Lord as the Covenant God of Israel. Psalm 59:5

THE APPLICATION OF FAITH

What else must be done to ensure that God would hear his prayer? David must have searched his heart and mind even as he pondered this thought. There was something else he must do! He must apply his faith in the Lord.

“But You, O LORD, shall laugh at them;
You shall have all the nations in derision.”
Psalm 59:8

1. “But You, O LORD, shall laugh at them”

a) These words are reminiscent of Psalm 2:4.
b) The laughter of God:-
i) The mightiest people on earth are puny in God’s sight.
ii) The most powerful activities of the wicked would be totally futile.
iii) God is described as laughing at the frantic plans of the wicked.

2. “You shall have all nations in derision”

a) Saul and his men could not be compared to “all nations”.
b) Even if “all nations” were enemies, God would deride the wicked!

3. An exercise of faith

a) David must establish the foundation of his faith in God.
b) The greatness of God must be borne in mind.
c) He must fight the fear that threatened to overwhelm him; he must instead believe that the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel would hear his prayer and deliver him.
