Psalm 59:5 "O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel..."

Day 201 – Psalm 59

“O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel…” Psalm 59:5

A STRONG AND FORMAL INVOCATION

David must have wondered just why God had not answered his prayer yet! What else could he do to bring about Divine attention and action? He decided that he would now invoke the name of God in full formality!

“You therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Awake to punish all the nations;
Do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors.”
Psalm 59:5

1. “You therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel”

a) O LORD of hosts
i) God is addressed as “The Commander-in Chief” of the heavenly army.
ii) Hosts – The mighty Divine army in heaven
iii) God was LORD of this heavenly host
b) The God of Israel
i) This is an appeal to God’s covenant-relationship with Israel.
ii) David was making a formal appeal to the Lord as the God of Israel.
c) You therefore
i) This was an attempt to appeal to “logic”.
ii) Would not the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel act to defend His servant who had been anointed the next king of Israel?

2. “Awake to punish all the nations”

a) David was aware that there were other enemies of the state.
b) Saul and his men were not the only people who deserve Divine punishment!

3. “Do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors”

a) David knew the greatness of God’s mercy.
b) He pleaded with God not to show mercy to those who were unrepentant wicked transgressors!
