Day 171 – Psalm 56

“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You…” Psalm 56:3a

FACING FEARS EFFECTIVELY

David grappled with fearsome threats to his life. He could not wish his fears away. His knowledge of God and his faith stood him in good stead.

“Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You.
In God (I will praise His word),
In God I have put my trust;
I will not fear.
What can flesh do to me?”
Psalm 56:3-4

1. Experiencing fear

a) It is not shameful to admit to having fears.
b) It is not sinful to speak of having to fight fears.

2. Exercising trust in God

a) It is wise to exercise faith in God at all times.
b) It is both necessary and wise to exercise trust in God in times of dreadful fear.
c) Drawing from God’s word.

David drew much from his knowledge of the Scriptures. In his hour of need he found himself drawing much from God’s word.

i) Much hope
ii) Much courage
iii) Much strength

3. Expressing faith in God

David’s enemies must have struck a great chord of fear in his heart. He may have worried about what his enemies would do if they caught him! Through knowledge of God from the Scriptures, prayer and trust, David was able to say with confidence “What can flesh do to me?” This was not spoken out of arrogance! These words were spoken out of deep conviction of trust in God.
