Day 170 – Psalm 56

“My enemies would hound me all day…” Psalm 56:2

THE HARD CIRCUMSTANCES OF LIFE

David faced hard circumstances of life many times. Though he was a strong believer in God, he was not spared from having to face problems in life. The following text gives us a glimpse of the hard times David was going through.

“Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up;
Fighting all day he oppresses me.
My enemies would hound me all day,
For there are many who fight against me, O Most High.”
Psalm 56:1-2

1. Enumerating the problems

a) Enemies
i) They are identified clearly as “enemies”.
ii) David had many enemies.
b) Attacks of the enemies
i) They would “swallow him up”. The threat of being killed was very real
ii) Oppression was felt keenly.
iii) Fighting went on all day.
iv) Hounding every day.

2. Crying out to God

a) Simply as “God”.
b) Reaching out to God as “Most High”.

3. The plea for mercy

David chose to plead for “mercy” because this was what he knew he needed most of all!
If he survived all the trials and tribulations he was experiencing, it would be because of God’s mercy!
