“He has broken his covenant…” Psalm 55:20b
THE COVENANTS BETWEEN GOD AND MAN
The Scriptures teach us about the Covenants God established with man. The following were covenants God established with mankind:-
1. Noahic Covenant Genesis 9:8-17
2. Abrahamic Covenant Genesis 15:18
3. Sinaitic Covenant Deuteronomy 5:1-22; Exodus 24:1-8
4. Levitical Covenant Malachi 2:4-5
5. Davidic Covenant Psalm 89: 3-4; 2 Samuel 7
6. The New Covenant Jeremiah 31:31
These Covenants of God were highly instructive and rich in theological significance. They teach us much about God. They also teach us much about how man is to behave in these covenantal relationships with God.
THE COVENANTS BETWEEN MAN AND MAN
The Scriptures also teach us about the covenants that man may make with fellow man.
1. Covenant between Isaac and Abimelech (Genesis 26:26-31)
2. Covenant between Jacob and Laban (Genesis 31:43-55)
3. Covenant between David and Jonathan (1 Samuel 18:1-3)
These covenants are essentially treaties or pacts of friendship. Those who are righteous will always seek to honour the established covenants.
THE WICKED DISREGARD COVENANTS
David made an observation about the wicked with reference to covenants (man to man).
“He has put forth his hands against those
who were at peace with him;
He has broken his covenant.”
Psalm 55:20
The wicked will not honour the covenant promises they make with people!
