Day 148 – Psalm 54

“Hear my prayer, O God…” Psalm 54:2a

PRAYING IN DESPERATE TIMES

How was David to pray when he faced desperate times? The following text offers a glimpse of how he prayed when his life was in obvious danger.

“Hear my prayer, O God;
Give ear to the words of my mouth.
For strangers have risen up against me,
And oppressors have sought after my life.
They have not set God before them.”
Psalm 54:2-3

1. “Hear my prayer, O God”

a) Nothing was taken for granted.
b) This was a formal plea to God to hear this prayer offered to Him.

2. “Give ear to the words of my mouth”

a) David pleaded with God to give attention to his prayer request.
b) He would bring a vital matter to the attention of God.

3. Contents of the prayer

a) For strangers have risen against me.
i) A reference to the Ziphites.
ii) They certainly did not treat David as “a friend”.
b) And oppressors have sought after my life.
i) The Ziphites sought to deliver David to King Saul.
ii) David was caught between two groups of people who may be called “oppressors”.
c) They have not set God before them.

Their action of “oppression” would prove that they were not people who feared God!
