Day 135 – Psalm 52

“God shall likewise destroy you forever…” Psalm 52:5a

THE MISSING FACTOR

The wicked boasts too quickly. He sees only the present where his might seems to prevail over everything else. But the wicked has missed the most important factor- God!

“God shall likewise destroy you forever;
He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place,
And uproot you from the land of the living.”
Psalm 52:5

1. “God shall likewise destroy you forever”

a) The word “likewise” is important to note.
b) God does not delight in destruction.
c) The word “likewise” suggests that this is “reciprocal action”.
d) Just as the wicked destroys, so will the wicked be destroyed- by God!
e) God’s destruction is “forever”.

2. God’s Divine Judgment

a) “He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place”
i) The wicked will be plucked from the safety and comfort of his own home.
ii) He will be dispossessed as he has dispossessed his victims.
b) “And uproot you from the land of the living”
i) The wicked uprooted many from their homes (Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, was forced to flee for his life just as David was forced to uproot)
ii) The figure of “uprooting” was now applied to life and death.

God would cause the wicked to be uprooted from the land of the living. This was a poignant way of describing death. While God does not delight even in the death of the wicked, He will however make sure that the wicked will not thrive.
