Day 129 – Psalm 51

“Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion…” Psalm 51:18a

THE GOOD PLEASURE OF GOD

The concept of God’s good pleasure is well discussed in the writings of the apostle Paul. In his epistle to the Ephesians, Paul wrote about “the good pleasure” of God with reference to the following:-

1. The good pleasure of God’s will (Ephesians 1:5, 9).

2. God’s will was that Gentiles (all mankind) should be heirs of God in Christ (Ephesians 3:6).

PRAYER FOR GOD’S GOOD PLEASURE TOWARDS ZION

David now turned his thoughts away from himself, away from his sin-problem. His heart of concern must now be devoted to his people Israel, and Zion, the holy city of God.

“Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem.”
Psalm 51:18

1. “Do good in Your good pleasure”

a) David and Paul shared a similar understanding.
b) God’s good pleasure (His disposition; His will) must be desired and sought.

2. “Zion”

a) This was another name for Jerusalem.
b) This was the capital of the nation.
c) This was also the center of worship for the country.
d) God’s good pleasure must be sought on behalf of the capital.

3. “Build the walls of Jerusalem”

a) The walls are a symbol of security.
b) God’s defence of the city must be sought in prayer.
c) God’s blessings are vital and they must not be taken for granted.
