Day 115 – Psalm 51

“Against You, You only, have I sinned…” Psalm 51:4

A PUZZLING STATEMENT

The confession of David is most puzzling to say the least.

“Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in Your sight-
That You may be found just when You speak,
And blameless when You judge.”
Psalm 51:4

1. The nature of sin

The nature of sin is essentially “evil”. However, three aspects of sin may be noted.

a) We sin against people.
b) We sin against self.
c) We sin against God.

2. David’s focus

David’s biggest concern was that he had sinned against God Himself. To him, this was the greatest of the three aspects of sin. What does it mean to sin against God?

a) It is to transgress God’s laws.
b) It is an affront to God.
c) It is choosing to ignore God’s word.
d) It has grave consequences.

3. Facing God as Judge

a) David acknowledged God as the Divine Judge.
b) God would have to speak stern words against David.
c) David confessed guilt to guard the Name of God as Judge.
d) God is always “Just” and “Blameless” even when He metes out punishment.
