DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM OF SIN

Many approaches are recorded in the Scriptures. Three distinct approaches may be noted:-

1. Those who are wicked and unrepentant (Psalm 12:4).

2. Those who deny sin (1 John 1:8, 10).

3. Those who confess their sins and seek pardon from God (Psalm 25:11; Psalm 51:1-2).

WHAT SHOULD WE BE SEEKING FROM GOD?

David’s approach to the problem of sin is highly instructive. Let us humbly ponder the following text.

“Blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.”
Psalm 51:1c, 2

1. “Blot out my transgressions”

a) This was the first thing David sought.
b) Mercifully there is such a promise of blotting out sins (Isaiah 43:25; Isaiah 44:22).

2. “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity”

a) Sin was not just a deed.
b) It befouled a person so that he needs to be cleansed thoroughly (Isaiah 1:16-18).

3. “And cleanse me from my sin”

a) The words “wash” and “cleanse” are closely related.
b) The first word “wash” speaks of the process.
c) The second word “cleanse” speaks of the end of the process- “cleansed”.

How instructive and illuminating these insights are! May we seek more than just pardon from the sins we commit!
