Day 97 – Psalm 50

“That He may judge His people…” Psalm 50:4b

GOD AS JUDGE

The concept of God as a Judge is well utilized in the Book of Psalms. Many of the Psalms portray God as a judge of the wicked (Psalm 7, 9). In the context of Psalm 50, Asaph describes God as a Judge of His own people, Israel.

“He shall call to the heavens from above,
And to the earth, that He may judge His people”
Psalm 50:4

1. “He shall call”

a) This text describes God as the One who initiates the judgment.
b) It is different from the other psalms where the psalmist cries out to God to judge and to deal with the wicked.

2. The heaven and the earth

a) These terms “heaven” and “earth” are use metaphorically.
b) They are personified.
c) God calls upon them as impartial witnesses.

3. “That He may judge”

a) The word “judge” has an ominous tone about it.
b) The problem must be huge enough for God to call upon “heaven” and “earth” to be at the court that He would preside as Divine Judge.

4. “His people”

a) Ethnically, “His people” would be a reference to the descendants of Abraham.
b) With the title “God’s people” came certain responsibilities.
c) Did Israel truly walk worthy of God’s calling and His blessings outpoured?
