Day 96 – Psalm 50

“Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent…” Psalm 50:3

A POWERFUL PORTRAIT OF GOD

Asaph’s understanding of God was well-conceived and well portrayed. To some, God was just a passive deity. He must, of course, be given worship but He takes little interest in mankind. The following text reveals Asaph’s comprehension of God.

“Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent;
A fire shall devour before Him,
And it shall be very tempestuous all around Him.”
Psalm 50:3

1. A description of a very powerful Deity

a) He is “The Mighty One” (Psalm 50:1a).
b) He is God the LORD (Psalm 50:1b).

2. He is also very active

a) God will shine forth (Psalm 50:2b).
b) Our God shall come (Psalm 50:3a).
b) He will not keep silent (Psalm 50:3b)

3. He is a God to be feared

a) The symbol of fire was used to describe God.
i) Fire has great powers.
ii) Fire can destroy and devour all things.
iii) God is that consuming fire that can devour all things before Him.
b) The symbol of water.
i) Water is also a symbol of great power (not just gentleness and tranquility).
ii) In this context the word “tempestuous” would indicate the idea of a storm.
